Educating for moral character

In addition to the technical qualifications listed below, the ideal candidate has a demonstrable ability to fulfill the school’s mission and foster its values in the students. The school’s value and mission statements appear in the Welcome section of the school’s website.

The ideal candidate should have a track record consistent with the school’s value and mission statements, and should be able to demonstrate it through the presentation of syllabi and lesson plans. The candidate should be able to demonstrate to the hiring committee their ability to realize these educational objectives.

It is expected that the candidate demonstrates their awareness of the structural problems of educating for moral character in today’s society. As a case in point, values such as respect for the elders and behaviours such as greeting fellow-students and teachers with a salaam, require educational planning and scaffolded instruction. The educator can no longer assume that they are self-evident and will naturally be acquired in the home/school environment.
